BTEC (FAQs)

 BTEC - Frequently Asked Questions

What is the BTEC?
The BTEC Diploma in Public Services is an educational qualification in its own right which is widely recognised in the Armed Services as well as other public services, e.g. Fire Service, Police, Coastguard, etc. and also in industry and commerce. It is a vocational (what the candidate can do) rather than an academic (what the candidate knows and understands)

What is the value of the BTEC?
The value of the diploma can be gauged by the fact that it is recognised as being the equivalent of four GCSEs at C up to A level in England, Wales and Northern Ireland and level 5 in Scotland - A fact that will reflect well on anyone's CV!

Who awards the Diploma and runs the scheme?
The awarding body is Edexcel. The delivery centre for all Cadet Forces taking part in the scheme is the Cadet Vocational Qualification Office (CVQO) at the Cadet Training Centre, Frimley Park.

How much extra work is involved for the instructors?
Very little! The unit is required to keep the results and records of advancements, qualifications, activities and courses together with reports, certificates, task/work books, etc. all of which should be done as part of normal Cadet practice.

What are the advantages of the BTEC scheme?
- Cadets can use their training to gain a valuable educational qualification.
- The scheme gives the educational authorities tangible evidence that cadet training is of value to the young people
- There are no costs involved to either the cadets or their units.
- It is an incentive for senior cadets to remain in the cadet organisation.

How long does it take to complete the requirements for the BTEC diploma?
Although cadets may complete the requirements sooner, they will have up to three years to complete.

Do cadets need to re-register each year?
No, once they have registered there is no need to register again

When is the coursework sent into CVQO for review?
Unit HQ's can send to the CVQO copies of all Leadership course reports at any time - preferably as soon as the course is completed. There is no need to wait until a huge amount of paperwork is accumulated.

Should the Unit inform CVQO when a Cadet achieves a Proficiency level?
Yes please, as soon as it is completed - either as a listing or with copies of certificates

What about Adventure Training requirements?
This can take the form of a letter from the Unit stating which two AT activities have been completed. These can include any Duke of Edinburgh Award certificates and/or certain Leadership courses. Cadets must complete two activities & a residential stay/annual camp. Send details as soon as completed.

Do cadets need to complete a full Duke of Edinburgh Award to use towards the BTEC Diploma?
No, a minimum of Bronze Expedition training and/or Physical Recreation would count towards the Diploma.

One of my cadets now has a Silver (or gold) D of E Award - what happens next?
You need to advise CVQO that the cadet has the award. Send us a copy of the award so that we can update their records.

Does it matter if my cadets have not done the Bronze or Silver D of E, but are starting at the Gold level?
No, it doesn't matter which level they begin with.

What Sporting Achievements count?
Anything that proves cadets have competed at Unit/County/Country/Olympics/School levels. You need to provide CVQO with a list and/or copies of certificates of what sporting activities the cadets have undertaken AND at what level they competed. This can also include copies of letters or certificates from schools if appropriate.

I am unsure of the deadlines for the various units.
Unit 1 (IVA) - can only be completed Feb - Mar. If a cadet misses or fails this assignment, he/she must wait until the following year when a new one will be issued. Once passed, it does not have to be taken again.
Unit 2/3 - Workbook - (Nutrition & teamwork questions) - can be completed any time of the year at the Unit's convenience. A new set of questions will be issued for Sep 03, but the old one can continue to be used until then.
Remainder of Units - at the convenience of the Unit - there are no deadlines set by either CVQO or Edexcel.
